Meet the Camp Staff

Introducing (drumroll please)... your fabulous Kids Culinary Camp staff for Summer 2014!

Camp director:

     Jennie Merrill

My name's Jennie Merrill and I'm the director of the SoFAB Kids Culinary Camp this summer! Thanks for stopping by to check in on all the fun activities we've been doing this summer and I hope you find some ideas for your own family culinary experiments. In the meantime, here's a little background info about me:

I'm originally from Lincoln, Nebraska but moved down to New Orleans 5 years ago after graduating North Park University in Chicago. I moved to work as a teacher and guidance counselor for GED students in Chalmette through AmeriCorps. Afterwards, I worked as the Job Coach Coordinator at Lighthouse Louisiana, teaching folks with disabilities the hard and soft skills needed to maintain employment. Most recently however, I worked as a 4th grade support teacher at Sylvanie Williams College Prep, focusing on reading intervention.

Phew, that's a lot of information! On the fun-side, I love playing trivia, taking roadtrips, and potlucks. Check out this link to see what I bring to potlucks http://allrecipes.com/recipe/slow-cooked-baked-beans/detail.aspx (pro-tip, add navy beans and crowder peas!). Keep checking in for more tales and pictures of our budding chefs. Cheers!

Counselors:

     Samantha Lange

Hi everyone! My name is Sam Lange, and I am a rising senior at Tulane University where I double major in Public Health and Psychology. I plan to earn my Master's in Public Health with a concentration in Nutrition. I want to work in the field of childhood obesity prevention or sustainable nutrition for people with dietary restrictions. I'm a NOLA girl born and raised so, of course, I love seafood, Mardi Gras, and snowballs! My favorite restaurant is Superior Seafood (the Tchoupitoulas Chicken is to die for). When I'm not cooking up a storm with your little chefs, I like to run in Audubon Park, watch Grey's Anatomy, and play volleyball and softball. I even coached varsity softball at McGehee High School this spring. I am so excited to be a counselor for SoFAB's Kids Culinary Camp and look forward to the wonderful summer ahead :)

     Carolyn Rath

Hey y'all! My name is Carolyn Rath and I am so excited to be a counselor for the Kids Culinary Camp this summer! I'm originally from Phoenix, AZ, and I'm currently studying Biology at Duke University with minors in Global Health and Chemistry. This is my first time in New Orleans, and I'm looking forward to a summer of adventures in the Big Easy! In my free time, I love playing tennis, swimming, and hiking in the beautiful Arizona mountains. Also, I LOVE to bake (my specialty is bundt cakes - check out one of my favorite recipes here)! My favorite food is my mom's homemade pizza, yum! I can't wait to share our camp experiences with you all - thanks for reading, and bon appétit!

     Paige Scarbrough

Hi everyone! I’m Paige Scarbrough, and I’m one of the camp counselors this summer!  I’ll be a junior this fall at Duke University, where I’m majoring in Psychology with a minor in Chemistry.  Originally, however, I am from the suburbs of Atlanta.  This is my very first time in New Orleans, so I am looking forward to experiencing all that it has to offer this summer! Because my favorite meal is jambalaya, I’m especially looking forward to the delicious food here.  In my spare time I like to read books, explore new restaurants, and binge watch TV shows on Netflix.  I hope you enjoy reading about what’s happening at our camp this summer!

     Zeynep Sheikh

Hey y'all! My name is Zeynep Sheikh and I am a rising junior at Tulane University. I'm double majoring in Finance and Management and hoping to attend law school in the future. I'm from Houston, Texas, so I'm a big fan of Tex-Mex and BBQ. I'm also half Turkish and half Pakistani so I love cooking and trying dishes from all over the world! I love to travel and especially enjoy visiting Istanbul, Turkey, where my mom's side of the family lives.  I really look forward to the rest of this summer and working with all of the kids and my fellow counselors!
